Changing Currents
Space Studios Ilford

Myself and Louise Beer (super/collider) are pleased to announce a new commission; Changing Currents.

Space Studios, Ilford.
Launch event Wednesday 8 February, 4 – 7.30pm
Gallery open Weds 11am – 5pm, Sat 11am – 3pm

This project, funded by Arup, saw students from Beal High School in Redbridge co-create work alongside Arup experts, artist collective super/collider and the River Roding Trust. Together they explored the human impact on the River Roding in Redbridge and the wider environmental issues.

Inspired by Arup’s commitment to consider the influence of the built environment on the natural world, the students drew on the differing experiences of time, scale and senses to explore the river from the perspectives of both human and non-human animals.

Over a number of weeks, the students visited the river, walking along the banks to consider the different types of pollution, including litter, noise, water, air and light, and their effect on the natural environment. Using hydrophones and simple light refraction techniques, they were able to explore what it might be like for species living under the water to navigate artificial light and dark spaces created by our built environment. They used infra-red photography to depict the environment through the eyes of species living within the habitat, while microscopes attached to student smart phones helped them discover the world in close-up. Students documented their work via drawings and photographs, using environmentally sustainable materials to create prototypes, images, and natural cyanotype prints of their discoveries. They recorded their emotional responses in booklets and audio recordings, all of which are on display in the exhibition.

Curated by super/collider, the exhibition invites visitors to consider the way we interact with the world around us, both individually and collectively, encouraging us to consider the actions we can take to shape a better world for ourselves and our future.  A Tree of Hope will flourish throughout the duration of the show, collecting visitors’ thoughts and feelings, messages of hope and calls to action.

Glacial Movements & The Ghaib
Pak Khawateen Painting Club and Lumen Studios

Pak Khawateen Painting Club and Lumen Studios (Lumen) are happy to announce that our project Glacial Movements and the Ghaib will be exhibited at VM Art Gallery, Karachi, Pakistan from 4th to 25th March 2023. Above you can see images from our visit to Passu Glacier.

The project was selected through an open call that awarded four grants to proposals co-developed between Pakistan and UK partners that offer opportunities for cross-cultural creative practices, knowledge exchange and new artistic work.

Pak Khawateen Painting Club and Lumen have developed new experimental art works based upon shared research activities and an expedition to the Gilgit Baltistan region. There they have worked with indigenous communities and local experts to recognise the severe impact climate change has and will continue to have on indigenous people whilst considering themes of sustainable tourism and migration. The project builds upon Pak Khawateen Painting Club’s previous expeditions on the River Indus, supported by the Lahore Biennale 2020, Graham Foundation and Sharjah Art Foundation 2023.

Pakistan-UK New Perspectives 2022 programme has been launched to celebrate Pakistan’s 75th anniversary of Independence in 2022. The programme features projects addressing shared global challenges including but not limited to digital innovation, environmental sustainability, gender equality, diversity and inclusion principles, and empowering young leaders of the future.

Metals and minerals are of the earth - extracted, purified, dried, cut, mould, extruded, dissolved and filtered. Photographic images are of the earth, they are metals and minerals, polished, coated, sensitised, exposed, developed, washed, fixed, displayed. We rely on the sensitivity of these metals to depict the world around us, the earth that they come from.

Silver has taken a leading role in this history - it is a history of colonisation, extraction, and depiction. From Louis Daguerre’s Daguerreotypes to Henry Fox Talbot’s calotypes in the early 1800s, to today’s digital Chromogenic prints - silver is seen as unbeatable when it comes to making a quality, archivable photographic image. However, silver is not the only metal used for image making.

The London Alternative Photography Collective present “Beyond Silver”, an exhibition that explores the relationships between analogue photography and metallurgy. The exhibition will consider the use of silver in photography, as well as shining a light on many of the other metals that are used within photographic image production, in both historical and contemporary practice. In addition to silver, the exhibition will include works which utilise  lesser known metals in photography including iron, copper, tin, aluminium, platinum and palladium.

Exhibiting artists: Ignacio Acosta, Victoria Ahrens, William Arnold, Alex Boyd, Alice Cazenave, Caitriona Dunnett, Hannah Fletcher, Jo Gane, Kate Goodrich, Martha Gray, Charlotte Greenwood, Constanza Isaza, Ellisa Jane Diver, Soham Joshi, Melanie King, Liane Lang, Sara Mulvey, Andrés Pardo, Oliver Raymond-Barker, Megan Ringrose, Kris Skyla, Sayako Sugawara, Diego Valente, Eileen White

This exhibition is supported by Canterbury Christ Church University, the Exeter Sustainability Institute, Falmouth University and the University of Birmingham.
