Testimonials

Ed Sykes

"Melanie was top of my list when I received Arts Council funding for a project that involved photography, environment and materiality. Her expertise, depth of knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject I felt was perfect for what I needed. I spent an enjoyable day with Melanie in Ramsgate, in her darkroom processing film sustainably and walking the nearby coast taking photographs and collecting seaweed. We talked and exchanged ideas and I was left brimming with new found knowledge and excitement for the rest of my DYCP project. I would of course highly recommend Melanie to anyone interested in learning from her!"

"I was awarded an a-n bursary to make large cyanotypes of some new work. I commissioned Melanie as a mentor during this period of development. It was a lovely experience. Melanie was super professional plus warm and inviting. She has an in-depth knowledge of alternative photographic processes and shared this knowledge in an accessible way. Melanie also tuned in to my aims and was able to help me in ways intrinsic to my project. She was very generous with sharing resources with me too and is genuinely working with sustainable processes. I highly recommend!"

"Melanie is an incredibly informed and supportive teacher/mentor. She has an extensive knowledge and experience of working with analogue photography and sustainable photographic processes, and is very generous and open in sharing it. I have attended a number of Melanie’s online workshops, and also had some one-to-one mentoring sessions as part of my recent DYCP. Would highly recommend!!"

"I received a DYCP Grant from Arts Council England in June 2022. I did a series of workshops with Mel at her studio in Margate covering – Caffenol developer, Seaweed developer, Anthotypes & Large Format Photography. As a traditional analogue photographer, it was the first time I’d really considered plant based and natural alternatives to the chemicals I was so used to using.

Mel was incredibly open & supportive in sharing her knowledge and expertise, my time in Margate was instrumental in moving the project forward. I left incredibly motivated and excited about the endless possibilities for the project. I look forward to collaborating with her in the future.

Would highly recommend anyone going and spending time learning from her. Really enjoyed our discussions during lunch over a good cup of tea!! would definitely give 5 starts on trip advisor!"
